History of GEN

The Global Education Network (GEN) was established in 2011 for the purpose of using education to advance global development. The organisation was registered at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) Abuja Nigeria as an incorporated nonprofit making establishment, which is limited by guarantee. The registration number on the certificate of incorporation is RC: 1310843. It is a global society of educationists with a global reputation. 

GEN has more than three hundred members drawn from educational institutions in various countries. Her maiden conference was held in 2012 at the Kampala International University Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where the founder, Professor Martins Fabunmi, was the Foundation-Dean of the Faculty of Education.

The organisation is yet to secure funding from government, non-government or educational institutions for its conferences and other activities since its inception. The members usually make contributions to ensure that GEN holds its conferences annually. Sources of funding have been mainly through conference registrations and financial support from the founder. The organisation assists in funding a few reputable academic journals. It is a platform for the mentorship of educators through research and conferencing.

GEN's Activity Model

GEN has a tradition of giving awards periodically. Some recipients were given awards during the following annual conferences: the 2016 Conference at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana; the 2019 Conference at the University of Sierra Leone; the 2020 Conference at the University of Lomé, Togo; and the 2022 Conference at the BAISAGO University, Botswana. GEN received the 2022 Mentorship Merit award from the Education Dialogue Association (EDUDIA) for its unflinching contribution to the development of global education for a period of ten years (2012-2022).

In 2023, the GEN conference has moved from Africa to Europe. The organisation is blessed with executive members whose publications received top ratings from prestigious professional associations. Currently, GEN partners with universities in different countries and the London-based training and development consultancy group, ‘Soft Contents UK’.

Conferences

GEN organises academic conferences on topical and exigent issues in different countries.

GEN supports the funding of academic journals in Universities. This is a way of mentoring trainers with a view to improving their qualities and thus the quality of education.

Appointments

Appointment to the office of President of GEN shall be by interview. The GEN president must be an outstanding scholar, preferably a professor. The tenure of the president shall not exceed two consecutive terms of two years each.

The Board of Directors shall advertise the position internally. Qualified candidates are expected to submit written applications, curricula vitae and short plans of action. A panel of seven interviewers shall be constituted by the Board to conduct interview and recommend two candidates to the Board of Directors for approval.

The Board shall nominate members as the executive members who will work with the appointed President. This will enable total adherence to the strategic goals and rules of the organization.

Membership Policy

There are two types of GEN membership:

Interested scholars who are interested in this form of membership shall obtain, complete, and submit the life membership form which costs $20 only. The renewal is at a yearly cost of $20 per member.

This form of membership of GEN costs only $10 and is open to every registered conference participant. It is usually for that year alone. Membership certificates are to be issued alongside with certificates of participation at the end of every conference.
